Keeping Fit

Those who like to keep fit and work off dinnertime indulgences will be pleased to hear that almost all cruise ships offer some sort of gym facility, with larger ships often equipped with large state-of-the-art fitness centres. The largest ships also offer additional features, such as the boxing rings found on board ships in Royal Caribbean’s Freedom Class.

Gym opening times vary between cruise lines and will be made clear on board. Gym induction services are offered throughout each cruise and qualified fitness professionals are employed to provide advice on fitness plans and personal training aims; personal trainers are available to provide a one-to-one service on many ships. Fitness classes for all abilities are available on board every day and information on the day’s classes can be found in the daily program provided in your stateroom each evening. Some classes may incur a charge.

In addition to indoor fitness centres, many cruise ships also feature outdoor sports courts. These include facilities for football, volleyball, tennis, basketball and golf. Climbing walls are a popular feature on cruise ships in fleets including that of Royal Caribbean, whilst rope courses aboard ships in the Norwegian Cruise Line fleet offer a fun way to keep fit. It is important to check with your travel insurance provider that activities of this kind are covered under your policy before participating.

Running tracks feature on most cruise ships and are often located at the top of the ship, spanning the circumference of the entire open deck. Certain ships in the Princess Cruises fleet incorporate outdoor fitness equipment within their jogging track, giving guests the opportunity for a full body workout without being confined to the indoor fitness centre.
