Explora Journeys Confirms Orders for 2 New Hydrogen-Powered Ships

Explora Journeys has just announced its firm orders for two hydrogen-powered ships with Fincantieri, an Italian shipbuilder. This move further solidifies their commitment to achieving a net zero-carbon emissions target by 2050. In addition to these hydrogen-powered ships, Explora Journeys will continue to explore new and advanced environmental technologies for their luxury fleet. This investment completes a substantial €3.5 billion investment in a total of six luxury ships.

The two new ships, EXPLORA V and EXPLORA VI, will incorporate state-of-the-art energy efficiency measures and will be capable of using alternative fuels like bio and synthetic gas, as well as methanol. These additions to the Explora Journeys fleet are scheduled to be delivered in 2027 and 2028.

To further reduce carbon emissions, the ships will utilise liquid hydrogen with fuel cells for their hotel operations while docked in ports, keeping their engines switched off. The vessels will also feature new-generation LNG engines with containment systems to tackle the issue of methane slip. LNG is known as one of the cleanest marine fuels, reducing local air pollutant emissions significantly.

Explora Journeys’ focus on sustainability extends to their first ship, EXPLORA I, which was delivered in July 2023 and is currently operating in Northern Europe.

The construction of EXPLORA III, an LNG-powered vessel, will commence in summer 2026, while EXPLORA IV, also LNG-powered, will begin construction in January 2024 with completion expected in early 2027.

All six ships in Explora Journeys’ fleet will be equipped with the latest environmental and marine technologies. Selective catalytic reduction technology will reduce nitrogen oxide emissions by 90%, while shore power plug-in connectivity will minimise emissions in port. Additionally, underwater noise management systems will be in place to protect marine life. These ships will also feature a comprehensive range of onboard energy-efficient equipment to optimise engine use and further reduce emissions.
