Gratuity amounts and methods vary between river cruise lines, though very few actually stipulate an amount and automatically deduct it from your on board account. Most cruise lines, including AmaWaterways, Viking and APT, simply suggest a recommended amount (around €12 per person per day on European cruises). This amount fluctuates depending on the currency of the region in which you are travelling and gratuities can be paid by card or cash envelopes, with the amount entirely dependent on the quality of service you feel you have received.

Please note that Viking River Cruises does not accept credit cards as payment for gratuities on itineraries in Egypt, Southeast Asia and Portugal.
