Yorkshire could welcome its own dedicated cruise port, as plans to construct a Hull cruise terminal take another step forward.

Hull City Council announced it had appointed specialist international firm Royal HaskoningDHV to provide support for the project, which would give cruise passengers another departure port to choose from in the north of England. Cruises from Liverpool and Newcastle are currently available, but this would be the first major commercial port on the Yorkshire coast.

Councillor Daren Hale, Leader of Hull City Council, explained that the Cruise Hull Yorkshire terminal would boost job opportunities in the area, as well as increase tourism.

“Hull needs a dedicated cruise facility in the heart of the Old Town so that we can greet cruise passengers with a five-star welcome and an immediate experience of Hull, in addition to the region’s world-class visitor attractions.

“This could also be a carbon reduction measure, reducing the need for journey to south coast ports.”

The design for the new cruise terminal in Hull currently includes shore-side electricity, enabling cruise ship operators to switch off their engines while in port. Instead, vessels will be able to rely more heavily on efficient power systems, in turn allowing them to cut overall emissions.
