Saga Ocean Cruises‘ first-ever new-build ship, the hotly anticipated Spirit of Discovery, took to the water for the first time today ahead of her inaugural sailing this July.
Spirit of Discovery, constructed in the Meyer Werft Shipyard in Germany, will now undergo a range of sea trials before her keel laying ceremony, currently scheduled for 3 June, and ahead of her inaugural sailing in early July.
A balcony for every guest
Spirit of Discovery, along with her sister ship, Spirit of Adventure, aims to bring luxury boutique cruising to the UK, with a choice of free speciality restaurants, a balcony for every guest, Saga’s trademark fantastic service and an exciting partnership with Jools Holland, the face of their new venue aboard Spirit of Discovery and headline performer during her first season with Lord Robert Winston, renowned scientist, writer and TV presenter, guest lecturing during her inaugural sailing.
When launched in summer 2019, the ship will take the contemporary design, cuisine and service of the world’s best boutique hotels to the seas, delivering guests to a new idyllic destination each day, all the while delivering Saga’s celebrated personal service and award-winning value for money.
Saga Sapphire says farewell
Saga’s current ship, the much-loved Saga Sapphire, is entering into her farewell season this year and will leave the fleet in May 2020, making room for Saga’s second ever new build ship, Spirit of Adventure.

The inaugural season is on sale now. Sail from Dover to ‘Gourmet Spain’ or cross the Atlantic from Southampton on a grand 35-night ‘Fairytale of New York’, your boutique ship as much a destination as the places it visits.
